As a primary school teacher for over a decade, I’ve seen hundreds of lunchboxes opened — and quietly closed — without a bite. What parents pack and what kids actually eat are often two very different things. So here’s a candid look from the teacher’s desk.
1. Portion Matters More Than You Think
Many parents overpack. Kids have just 15–20 minutes to eat, and they’re easily distracted. Large portions go untouched. Keep it light and manageable. A small, tasty meal is better than a grand meal that goes to waste.
2. Don’t Overdo “Healthy”
Yes, nutrition is key — but food also has to appeal to young taste buds. Raw sprouts, overly dry millet rotis, or brown rice every day? Most kids push it aside. Balance nutrition with taste.
3. Smell is a Big Factor
Strong smells (like garlic-heavy gravies or boiled veggies) draw unnecessary attention and sometimes even teasing. I’ve seen children avoid eating just to escape embarrassment.
4. Kids Swap and Share a Lot
If your child loves the lunch, they guard it. If not, they offer it to others or trade it for chips or packaged treats. I’ve seen kids trade idlis for cream biscuits. That tells you everything.
5. Eggs Work Wonders
Boiled eggs or egg curries often disappear quickly — they’re nutritious, easy to eat, and rarely wasted. As long as the egg is fresh and not overcooked, it’s a reliable lunch hit.
A Note to Parents
If your child’s lunch comes back half-eaten often, don’t take it personally. Instead, try a different approach.
